They live on or just underneath the surface of the bottom of the ocean, on the abyssal plain, eating mud of the sea floor. They’re members of the phylum Echinodermata (starfish etc), which for unknown reasons are extremely successful in the biotic desert of the deep sea.


So very strange.

Also strange is the parasites they are prone to: tiny orange snails that burrow into them.

Today’s harvest

I absolutely love that we grew all this.

Beets, broad beans, peas, kale, lettuce, thyme, tarragon, squash blossoms, oregano, mint, basil, garlic, cucumber, Savoy cabbage, broccoli, wild flowers, rainbow chard, onion, spring onion, Desiree potatoes, Shetland black potatoes, and Honeysnack carrots.

Birthday Party

Yesterday was our niece B’s fourth birthday party. There were four four-year olds, one two-year-old, and two one-year-olds in attendance, as well us various adults. The noise was absolutely incredible.
